Tour GH: A Road Trip To Ahanta West District
The maiden edition of Tour GH trip commenced on Saturday, June 25, 2016. The trip saw Tour GH leading about 37 youth from different works of life within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. The road trip was to expose these tourists to the rich cultural history behind the TransAtlantic Slave Trade, as well as a feel of some of the natural features with the Ahanta West District.
The first stop was made at Dixcove, a small coastal fishing community which lies at the western side of Busua. In this community sits the British Fort which was built in 1692. Tourists learned about the history of Fort Metal Cross and the TransAtlantic Slave Trade. According to the Tourist Guide, the fort was initially built to store the commodities they traded with our forefathers, being gold, ivory, diamonds, etc. Later, instead of storing these items, human beings (slaves) were added when they started treating them as commodities. It took 8 years for the Fort Metal Cross to be built.
The next stop was at Butre, another coastal fishing community which lies at the eastern side of Busua. In this community, tourists toured the beautiful Butre Rocky Beach. Many thought beaches were only filled with sand and this trip exposes them to a kind of beach which is as beautiful as the sandy beach.
The Butre River Estuary was nothing that the tourists missed at all. The estuary is the point where the Butre River meets the Sea.
The day was rounded up with a smooth and scintillating Canoe Ride on the river. Tourists took to themselves to have fun, this time, not on land but on water. On the Canoe Ride, tourists learned about the importance of the River to the community as well as the Mangrove Forest.
Tourists expressed their excitement for not only an exciting trip but an educative and a successful one, where many really expressed their happiness that, "Yes! We have Explored in Comfort." Many are eager and can't wait for the next trip.
Mr. Alexander Penny Kattah Norming (Organiser, Tour GH), expressed his satisfaction with the whole event and how youths in Sekondi-Takoradi saw the essence to embark on this trip. He also promised of more exciting trips to follow..

Health Benefits Of Garlic
Hailed as the oldest cultivated
plant in the world, garlic’s amazing health and healing qualities have been
legendary for longer than the written word. Garlic is a natural remedy that
has been handed down for centuries. In fact, the Chinese have been
using garlic for medicinal purposes for more than three thousand years.
This ancient remedy has been
used to combat anemia, improve liver function, lower blood pressure,
prevent constipation and facilitate blood flow.
Due to garlic’s high sulfur
content, it has also been used to combat fungi, and to inhibit salmonella
Poison and bites by
mosquitoes, bees and scorpions. There has been so much research done on the
health benefits of garlic that it would take volumes to explain it
all. Although hundreds of studies have documented the health benefits of
garlic, our great grandparents didn’t need studies–they relied upon from folk
remedies and wisdom passed down for generations–and from their own experiences.
We know that garlic is good for
us, so let’s explore more of the powerful health and healing benefits garlic
has to offer.
Below are some health benefits
related to the use of Garlic;
- Relieves Ear Infections or Aches
The
use of garlic oil for ear infections or ear aches is an important natural
remedy handed down for generations. One recent study showed that 14 strains of
bacteria (taken from the noses and throats of children who had ear
infections) were killed when treated with garlic.
Try
and get more fresh garlic into your children’s diets—it may help eliminate
these
Infections
altogether.
Helps to Lower Cholesterol
Here’s another good reason to
eat fresh garlic daily. The liver makes cholesterol, so we don’t need to eat
any extra in our foods.
Unfortunately, cholesterol is
everywhere. Help lower your cholesterol by making better food choices and by
eating one-half to one clove of fresh garlic every day.
Studies showed that eating this
amount of garlic on a daily basis lowered cholesterol about 9 percent.
- Cough or Chest Cold Remedy
Garlic can be used to fight
coughs, chest colds and bacterial infections.
Crush a few garlic cloves, put
them in a jar or bowl, and cover them in olive oil.
Rub the oil on your feet.
(Adults can put garlic pieces
between your toes.)
Then put on socks and go to sleep.
The garlic enters your system
and heads to the lungs.
It enhances your immune system
and fights viruses.
You can also spread garlic
directly on your chest and back to soften the cough and relieve airways.
Garlic May Help You Live Longer
Effects on longevity are
basically impossible to prove in humans.
But given the beneficial effects
on important risk factors like blood pressure, it makes sense that garlic could
help you live longer.
The fact that it can fight
infectious disease is also an important factor, because these are common causes
of death, especially in the elderly or people with dysfunctional immune
systems.
Anything Else
For thousands of
years, garlic was believed to have medicinal properties. We now have the
science to confirm it.

A Look At Fort Metal Cross
Fort Metal Cross, Dixcove (1692)
The British colonial fortification, Fort Metal Cross (originally Dixcove Fort) is located on a promontory near the fishing village of Infuma, in Dixcove (Dick’s Cove) in the Western Region of Ghana. The cove’s quiet waters are suitable for small boats and canoes; large ships anchor approximately 2 kilometres offshore. For the British, the motive for commencing construction of Dixcove Fort in 1692 was identical to that of the Dutch in building Fort Batentstein - to tap into the promise of gold in the hinterland; and also to win back the many English captains trading at the Brandenburgers’ (Germans’) Fort Gross Friedrichsburg in nearby Princestown. However, the people of Infuma, loyal to two chiefs whose allegiances swayed between the British and Dutch, besieged the fort several times, on behalf of the Dutch, stalling its completion. By 1750, the fort was equipped to carry up to 25 canons.
The promise of gold never materialised, as the gold that was mined was largely impure gold. Hence, the fort earned the title of ‘the fake mint of the Gold Coast’ by author Bosman. Like Fort Batentstein, Fort Metal Cross became a service-station for the repair of ships and the supply of timber from the surrounding forest; and during the slave trade, it became a slave prison.
The 1867 fort exchange agreement between the British and Dutch resulted in Dutch ownership of the fort in 1868. The Dutch had to call for military reinforcement to restore calm in their new areas of control, as the local populace was infuriated by the swap, especially since they had not been consulted. The name of the fort was altered to ‘Metalen Kruis’ (Metal Cross), after one of the Dutch gun-boats which brought the reinforcement.
However, the immense cost of control persuaded the Dutch to sell their forts to the British. Hence, in 1872 the fort reverted to the British, who renamed it Fort Metal Cross.
The fort has served both the Police and the Postal Services. It has currently been leased to a private organization.
The fort’s opening hours are 9:00am to 4:30pm.
